Rosalía 的超大包与芭蕾高跟:配饰在说话

For Rosalía, No Bag Is Too Big, No Ballet Pump Too Bitchy

Rosalía has a lot of baggage—and even more shoe. The Spanish pop star has never been one to do things by halves. Not when it comes to her music, and certainly not when it comes to fashion; especially not when it comes to accessories. Spotted out and about in New York City, the singer appeared to be carrying everything but the kitchen sink in an absolutely gargantuan leather bag, while teetering along in a pair of ballet shoes that took the humble flat to dizzying new heights. Traveling light? Not in Rosalía’s vocabulary.

The bag in question is a custom creation by independent designer Dana Toder, measuring a whopping one meter long and 60 centimeters high. Originally designed for Lili Conzen’s forthcoming short film Krähe, which casts women over 70 in leading roles to explore “who gets to be looked at in fashion,” the leather holdall was made with the help of Toder’s 80-year-old leatherworking mentor, Shmulik. Its printed graphics incorporate archival photographs of women spanning the 1970s to today, reflecting on, as Toder puts it to Vogue, “how our belongings hold memories and emotions.” Conceived as a surreal take on those ubiquitous “What’s in My Bag?” videos, it gives the idea of emotional baggage a whole new meaning. (Toder currently offers custom orders of the bag in different variations, and in 2027, plans to release a smaller ready-to-wear version alongside a full collection—watch this space.)

Not content with an ordinary pair of ballet flats, Rosalía—who has been performing en pointe—opted for a pair of pale pink satin ballet platforms from Junko Shimada’s spring 2009 collection, with crisscrossing ankle ribbons, exaggerated black platforms, and transparent heels. The shoes have a fab pop cultural pedigree, too: Lady Gaga wore the shoes back in 2009, when her own penchant for architectural, gravity-defying footwear was in full swing. 15-plus years later, they look every bit as wonderfully impractical.

With accessories doing all the heavy lifting, Rosalía kept the rest of her ensemble simple: a black tank minidress, oversized black sunglasses, and her signature cloud of dark curls still crowned with that distinctive bleached halo.

Of course, the singer’s footwear is only the latest expression of her ongoing love affair with ballet. Onstage for her Lux tour, she has embraced the discipline both sartorially and physically, dancing en pointe in elaborate costumes including a custom Dior tutu by Jonathan Anderson. Offstage, though, her interpretations of the ballerina wardrobe tend to come with a considerably sharper edge. Recall the custom Yasmina Atta dress that married a plunging latex bodice with a frothy tulle tutu, slung low on the hips and toughened up with studded belts. It’s all been very Black Swan after dark.

Rosalía’s wardrobe is also a testament to her love for the unexpected, with stylist José Carayol mixing independent designers and fresh graduate looks with serious archival finds. She has layered a feathered belt from Rosalie Bernard’s graduate collection over jeans and a shirt, embraced a shaggy fringed knit jacket by Argentine designer Sofía Abadi, and worn pieces by Austrian designer Laura Andraschko. Then there are the treasures from the Alexander McQueen and Nicolas Ghesquière-era Balenciaga archives. It’s a wardrobe built on unlikely collisions and risk-taking finishing touches. And this latest outing proves a point (or pointe?): who needs an elaborate outfit when your accessories are doing this much talking?
